AMISOM Deploys New Police Unit from Ghana to the Southwest State

African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has deployed a police unit from Ghana that recently arrived in Somalia to the country’s Southwest State.

A Formed Police Unit (FPU) from Ghana was inducted into AMISOM’s police unit after nine days of intense induction in Southwest’s capital of Baidoa.

Ghana is one of AMISOM’s Police Contributing Countries (PCCs) together with Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.

The FPU from Ghana comprises 160 police officers.

During the induction exercise in Baidoa, the officers were trained on different aspects of the local culture to familiarize them with the region and the AMISOM mandate.

The new unit is expected to work closely with Somali Police Force (SPF) and local security officers in Southwest State to maintain law and order in the region.

AMISOM also expects the unit to provide escort and protection services to VIPs.

They would train and assist Somali police to manage and maintain public order, conduct joint patrols with their Somali counterparts, and secure key government installations in Southwest State.
