African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has handed over a police station that it constructed in Baidoa in Somalia’s semiautonomous region of Southwest.
The handing over, which took place on Saturday, is part of AMISOM’s exit plan from the Horn of Africa nation.
Authorities in the region received the facility, which will be used by Baidoa’s Somali Police Force (SPF).
SPF officers have been receiving training from AMISOM forces in the last few years to prepare them to take over functions such as maintaining law and order throughout the country.
The construction of the police station was made possible by funding from various international partners keen on rebuilding the country.
The government of Denmark provided the bulk of the funding in its role as one of Somalia’s major financial and security partner.
However, AMISOM implemented the project courtesy of its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs).
The construction and handing over of Bakiin Police Station falls under the funding international partners provide for the Somali Transition Plan.
