African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) rewarded soldiers from Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF) for providing excellent service in Somalia.
On Sunday, AMISOM rewarded soldiers from UPDF’s Battle Group XXVII, otherwise known as UGABAGXXII, with service medals for their contribution to making Somalia a peaceful nation.
AMISOM stated that UGABAGXXII had played a crucial role in ensuring that the organization accomplishes its mandate in the East African nation.
The UGABAGXXII troops are scheduled to leave the country on a rotational basis soon after completing their one-year service.
They were deployed to the region in April 2019.
Specifically, their mandate required them to conduct military operations against Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle.
The troops are likely to be replaced with Battle Group XXX, which would then be known as UGABAGXXX.
Maj. Gen. George Owinow, AMISOM’s Deputy Force Commander in charge of Logistics and Support expressed his pride and gratitude to the troops.
“We are here to honor and celebrate the UPDF heroes of Battle Group 27 as they complete their tour of duty with distinction,” Maj. Gen. Owinow said.
He promised that the incoming troops would not rest until AMISOM achieves its mission of securing the country.
