AMISOM Soldier Tests Positive for COVID-19

An African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) soldier has tested positive for COVID-19 in the Horn of Africa nation.

The soldier, who is part of the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) contingent in Somalia, is currently receiving treatment at a military facility in Mogadishu.

UPDF spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire confirmed the news while quoting the UPDF Commander in charge of the Somalia contingent.

Further, Brig. Karemire asserted that UPDF medical personnel are tracing the soldier’s contacts in Somalia to curb the spread of the virulent disease.

Currently, UPDF has over 5,500 soldiers in Somalia. It has been in the country since 2007 as part of the AU-led peacekeeping mission.

The news comes at a time when Somalia is arguably facing the worst of the pandemic in the region with over 500 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last month.
