AMISOM to Work Closely with Somalia for Secure and Successful Elections

African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has promised a close working relationship with Somalia to ensure the upcoming elections in the country are both “secure and successful.”

Somalia’s elections are scheduled to kick off in November 2020.

The country would be holding its local and primary elections before the end of the year. Presidential polls follow in February 2021.

There has been concern that insecurity could interfere with the elections in the East African country, especially now that Al-Shabaab seems to be ramping up its attacks.

On Thursday, October 22, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, who heads the AU Mission in Somalia, promised to provide all the support the security agents need for secure polls.

Ambassador Madeira made these comments while speaking with members of the Somali Public Agenda (SPA) in an online session.

He confirmed to SPA that AMISOM forces had trained their counterparts from Somali National Army (SNA) on managing electoral security threats.

Further, he said that members of the AMISOM Formed Police Units would be deployed in all areas controlled by their troops to support SNA, Somali Police Force, and all security agencies.
