African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has vowed to increase the pressure against Al-Shabaab.
The top cadre of AMISOM promised not to relent despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
AMISOM reduced the number of its troops in Somalia earlier this year.
However, the Chief Commander of the Sector 1 contingent, Richard Otto, said nothing has affected AMISOM’s operations despite reduced numbers and effects of COVID-19.
He stated that the troops were reduced by 1,000 but those who remained in the country have continually demonstrated professionalism.
Otto also mentioned some of the COVID-19 challenges his troops have to grapple with, which include the closure of airspaces and borders.
He reiterated AMISOM’s commitment to fighting against the Al-Qaeda linked group until the militants are completely defeated and eliminated from the Horn of Africa nation.
Otto cited the increased capability of Somali National Army (SNA) in keeping the extremists at bay and preventing them from causing more havoc around the country as a major success.
