AMISOM’s New Force Commander Reports to Office

The new Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has reported to office to assume his duties.

Lt. Gen. Diomede Ndegeya from Burundi is the new Force Commander.

His arrival in Somalia signals the beginning of a major period of transition for AMISOM in the Horn of Africa nation.

Ndegeya takes over from the departing Lt. Gen. Tigabu Yilma from the Ethiopian contingent.

Yilma has been the Force Commander since 2019. During his reign, AMISOM had major successes in the fight against terrorism in Somalia.

In his tenure, AMISOM forces successfully recaptured many towns from Al-Shabaab control.

On his part, Lt. Gen. Ndegeya expressed his gratitude to Lt. Gen. Yilma for the astute leadership he offered to AMISOM in the last two years.

As part of his mandate, Ndegeya would be helping the Federal Government of Somalia and AMISOM to implement the Somali Transition Plan (STP).
