Amnesty International Unhappy with Somali Journalist’s Continued Detention

Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of a Somali journalist who has been in detention since March 7, 2020.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) arrested and detained journalist Mohamed Abdiwahab Nur, who is more commonly known as Abuja.

Furthermore, Amnesty International has expressed fears over the conditions to which Abuja is exposed in detention, which increase his exposure to COVID-19.

NISA initially arrested and detained Abuja on February 29, 2020 before releasing him on March 2, 2020 without preferring any charges against him.

However, the intelligence agency rearrested and detained him on March 7, 2020. Since then, the agency kept him incommunicado until June 7, 2020 when they presented him in court.

Amnesty International released a press statement condemning the government’s decision to continue harassing Abuja.

The global human rights body has urged the government to release Abuja immediately and allow him to return to his loved ones.
