Approximately 100,000 Mogadishu Residents Fled from Their Homes on April 25

Approximately 100,000 residents of Mogadishu fled from their homes on April 25 when security forces clashed in the city.

On Sunday night, clashes broke out in the city between security forces loyal to President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and those opposed to his rule.

Consequently, thousands of the residents fled their homes on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), between 60,000 and 100,000 residents fled to safer grounds.

OCHA discovered that those who fled include Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are already vulnerable.

The global body reported that most of the escapees traveled to the outskirts of Somalia’s capital.

Cesar Arroyo, OCHA’s Acting Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, expressed concern over the deteriorating security in the capital of the East African nation.

Arroyo also stated that Sunday’s violence not only displaced innocent civilians, but also created unwanted uncertainty.

He warned that the situation is likely to disrupt distribution of humanitarian assistance to thousands of vulnerable individuals and communities in Mogadishu.
