Army clears mines in Middle Shabelle

BALCAD — The Somali National Army (SNA) conducted a highly critical mine clearance operation today in the Gololey area, located on the outskirts of Balcad town within the Middle Shabelle region.

Neutralizing Roadside Threats

During the sweep, the specialized Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the Somali National Army successfully located and safely removed an active improvised explosive device (IED). Intelligence indicated the device was recently planted by Al-Shabaab militants directly along a primary transit road.

The concealed explosive posed a severe and immediate threat to both local civilian residents and commercial vehicles utilizing the vital route. The district of Balcad has historically been targeted by such asymmetric tactics; in 2022, a devastating landmine explosion in the same town claimed the lives of several international peacekeepers traveling in convoy.

According to military officials, the SNA’s specialized EOD unit completed the delicate extraction and disposal task with absolute professionalism, preventing any localized casualties or infrastructural damage. This technical success mirrors similar historical operations where SNA engineering divisions safely defused roadside IEDs planted near civilian centers to prevent mass casualties.

Protecting Civilian Infrastructure

This localized clearance action is part of broader, continuous tactical efforts by the Somali National Army to aggressively improve rural security and prevent terrorist attacks against civilians.

Al-Shabaab frequently utilizes roadside explosives to disrupt government supply lines and terrorize local populations, a cowardly tactic that has previously resulted in tragic losses for advancing federal troops operating in the interior. By proactively sweeping transit corridors, the national military aims to permanently restrict militant mobility and secure the roads.

The SNA command confirmed that the armed forces will continue conducting these specialized, intelligence-driven operations focused squarely on ensuring unhindered public safety and protecting vulnerable communities across Middle Shabelle.
