The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) marked the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on Wednesday.
The International Day for Mine Awareness takes place every year on April 13.
In this year’s celebrations, ATMIS teamed up with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).
Somalia is one of the world’s hotspots where landmines are concerned.
Close to 670 people died from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which include landmines, in the East African nation.
According to James Swan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, it would take decades to clear up all the landmines in the country.
