The Kenyan contingent of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) officially handed over the Kudhay Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the Lower Jubba region to the Somali National Army (SNA) on Wednesday.
This transfer is part of the ongoing Phase Three of the ATMIS troop drawdown, which aims to gradually shift security responsibilities to Somali forces as they work toward taking full control of the country’s security.
The drawdown is in line with Somalia’s broader efforts to enhance its sovereignty and self-reliance in security operations.
For months, ATMIS has been handing over FOBs in several parts of the country to Somali military.
The handover is part of the activities ATMIS undertakes in Somalia as it prepares to leave the country completely by December 31 this year.
