AU Commission Chair Commends Somalia for Electing New Parliamentary Leadership

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) has commended Somalia for electing new leadership for the federal parliament.

Somalia concluded the election of the new parliamentary leadership on April 28.

Now, both chambers of the federal parliament have new speakers and deputy speakers.

Senate (Upper House) was the first to elect its leadership earlier this week followed by the House of the People (Lower House).

The Lower House made history by electing the first ever female Deputy Speaker.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, the AUC Chairperson, congratulated the legislators for this important milestone.

Specifically, he congratulated Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi of the Upper House and Speaker Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe of the Lower House.

He now urged parliament to proceed with the “peaceful, timely, and credible” elections of the country’s new President.

Mahamat encouraged stakeholders to abide by the electoral agreements signed on September 17, 2020 and May 7, 2021.
