Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, on Wednesday received El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, the newly appointed Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission (SRCC) and Head of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The meeting in Addis Ababa marked an important step in affirming the AU’s commitment to Somalia’s ongoing security transition as AUSSOM takes over from ATMIS. Ambassador Adeoye congratulated Diene on his new appointment and underscored the AU’s expectation of strong leadership during this critical period.
Discussions focused on the SRCC’s mandate, priorities, and responsibilities, particularly in guiding AUSSOM’s role in supporting Somalia’s security sector reform, political stabilization, and the phased transfer of security responsibilities to Somali forces.
Both sides highlighted the importance of working in close partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia, regional states, and international partners to consolidate the country’s gains against terrorism and ensure stability. The meeting also emphasized the need to sustain momentum on peacebuilding and institution-building, even as AUSSOM prepares to operate with a reduced troop presence compared to ATMIS.
Diene’s appointment comes at a pivotal time when Somalia is navigating security, political, and humanitarian challenges. His leadership is expected to shape how the AU mission supports Somali-led efforts in advancing peace, governance, and regional stability.
