ADDIS ABABA — The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) delivered a firm rebuke on Thursday concerning Israel‘s recognition of the Somaliland authority, declaring the action invalid under international law.
In a statement issued from the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Council strongly reaffirmed Somalia‘s unity and territorial integrity.
Rejection of Unilateral Action
The body called for an immediate withdrawal of the recognition decision made in December 2025. The African Union underscored that no entity can modify the recognized territorial boundaries of the Federal Republic of Somalia, clearly dismissing any independent status for the Somaliland administration.
Israel continues to be the sole country to have recognized Somaliland, an action that has generated extensive condemnation throughout the Horn of Africa and among the international community.
The African Union’s position strengthens the worldwide consensus on Somalia’s unity and represents a clear rejection of unilateral measures that jeopardize regional peace.
Focus on Al-Shabaab
Regarding security matters, the Council welcomed the substantial progress in the current campaign against Al-Shabaab militants.
The statement urged Somali security forces and international allies to enhance operations targeting the elimination of extremist elements. Additionally, the communiqué emphasized the importance of regional authorities maintaining their contributions to the anti-Al-Shabaab efforts to ensure nationwide stability.
