AU Discusses Security Arrangements in Somalia Post-ATMIS

The African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) convened its 1253rd Ministerial Meeting to deliberate on security arrangements after the conclusion  of the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

ATMIS’ mission is set to conclude operations on December 31, 2024.

Afterward, the transition to AUSSOM (African Union Somalia Support Operation Mission) is planned to commence on January 1, 2025, ensuring continuity in supporting Somalia’s security and stabilization efforts.

The AU PSC outlined that AUSSOM will have a troop strength of under 12,000 and is expected to operate for a maximum of five years.

This new mission will focus on enabling the Somali National Army (SNA) to assume full responsibility for national security while addressing the persistent threat of terrorism.

The transition reflects the African Union’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and long-term peacebuilding efforts.
