AU Doubles Peace Fund Allocation to Somalia Mission

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The African Union (AU) Executive Council has approved an additional US$10 million from the AU Crisis Reserve Facility (CRF), effectively doubling the 2025 budget allocation for the AU Peace Fund to US$20 million. The increased funding is directed to support the AU’s ongoing mission in Somalia, amid preparations for a crucial security transition.

The decision, endorsed during the Executive Council’s latest session in Addis Ababa, reflects the AU’s commitment to strengthening peacekeeping and stabilization efforts in Somalia, where Al-Shabaab militants continue to pose a threat to national and regional security.

The AU Peace Fund is a key financial instrument designed to ensure African-led responses to peace and security challenges. This additional allocation comes at a critical time, as the AU transitions from African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), following a phased drawdown of ATMIS forces.

According to AU officials, the increased funding will enhance operational capabilities, support Somali National Army-led operations, and facilitate a sustainable security handover.

“The AU Peace Fund is demonstrating its readiness to meet Africa’s peace and security challenges head-on. This boost in funding for Somalia underscores our commitment to supporting Somali-led stabilization efforts,” said a senior AU official involved in the decision.

Somalia continues to grapple with complex threats, including terrorism, political instability, and humanitarian crises. The AU’s continued financial and military support is viewed as a crucial pillar for consolidating gains and preventing a relapse into conflict.

The AU Peace Fund was revitalized in 2016 with the goal of reaching US$400 million in member state contributions. The recent approval reaffirms efforts to ensure that African solutions to African problems are backed by African resources.
