AU Envoy Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Peace Efforts

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday received the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) and Head of the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, at Villa Somalia.

The high-level meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Federal Government of Somalia and the African Union as the country continues to transition toward full security ownership and political stability.

Amb. Diene reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia-led peacebuilding, stabilization, and political processes. He emphasized that AUSSOM, the new AU mission set to replace ATMIS, is fully aligned with Somalia’s national priorities.

“The African Union stands firmly with the Somali people in their pursuit of peace, security, and self-reliance,” said Amb. Diene, while expressing appreciation to the Somali government for what he described as “exceptional hospitality and constructive engagement.”

President Mohamud commended the AU’s role in Somalia’s security transition and praised the dedication of AU peacekeepers who have helped stabilize the country in partnership with Somali security forces.

The meeting comes as AUSSOM prepares to begin operations following the approved Concept of Operations (CONOPS), which outlines a leaner force structure with fewer than 12,000 troops and a mandate focused on supporting Somali institutions, rebuilding local governance, and countering threats from extremist groups.

The President and the AU envoy agreed to maintain regular dialogue as Somalia enters a critical phase in its stabilization roadmap.
