The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has denounced a recent assault by Al-Shabaab militants on its forces in Buurane village, Mahaday district, HirShabelle State.
In a statement released today, AUSSOM reported that Burundian peacekeepers were securing a helicopter landing zone when they were ambushed by the extremist group. The troops successfully repelled the attack, killing one Al-Shabaab militant in the process.
Acting AUSSOM Head Sivuyile Bam condemned the assault, stating, “This cowardly use of roadside bombs will not weaken our determination to help Somalia achieve the lasting peace its people deserve.”
Bam praised the Burundian contingent’s rapid response, which helped limit casualties, though the mission did not disclose specific figures on troop losses.
“We remain steadfast in supporting the Federal Government and Somali Security Forces in their fight against Al-Shabaab and other armed groups,” he added, reaffirming AUSSOM’s commitment to Somalia’s stabilization.
The attack underscores Al-Shabaab’s persistent threat, despite ongoing joint offensives by Somali forces and international partners to degrade the militants’ capabilities.
AUSSOM, which succeeded the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) earlier this year, continues to provide operational, logistical, and stabilization support as Somalia transitions toward full security ownership.
