The African Union (AU) has mourned the death of a former head of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
Nicolas Bwakira, an 80-year old Burundian, died on March 7.
AU issued a statement in which it sent its message of condolence to the family and friends of the deceased.
Bwakira served as the first Special Representative of the Chairperson of African Union Commission (AUC).
Additionally, he served as the AMISOM Head between 2007 and 2009.
In its message, AU called Ambassador Bwakira “a true African.”
AUC also celebrated Ambassador Bwakira’s successful efforts at liberating Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, from the hands of warlords and extremists.
