The African Union (AU) has said that Somalia is unprepared for the eagerly awaited one-person-one-vote (1P1V) elections.
The continental body made this observation during the recent meeting of all the 15 members of the AU Peace and Security Council.
While making this observation, AU also rejected the decision by the House of Representatives to extend President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term.
In early April, the Lower House voted overwhelmingly to extend Farmaajo’s term in office by two more years.
Farmaajo’s term had expired on February 8, 2021.
Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairman of the AU Commission (AUC), is now expected to deploy an envoy to Somalia.
The envoy’s primary task would be to lead mediation talks between various stakeholders in Somalia to ensure that credible elections take place soon.
