AU Security Chief Says ATMIS Would Replace AMISOM

The African Union (AU) Political Affairs, Peace, and Security Commissioner has named the organization that would replace African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, who is AU’s security chief, announced that African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) would take over all AMISOM’s functions.

Adeoye has been in Mogadishu for the last few days.

He’s held meetings with senior officials from the Somali government as well as AMISOM.

On March 1, he declared that ATMIS would replace AMISOM and focus on three primary functions.

First, ATMIS would prepare an army that’s capable of defeating Al-Shabaab with little or no assistance from external forces.

Secondly, ATMIS would strive to bring peace to all parts of Somalia.

Third, the new organization would work towards handing over all security functions to the Somali National Army (SNA).

According to Ambassador Adeoye, ATMIS’s goal is stabilizing Somalia and contributing towards the state-building process.
