The African Union (AU) Executive Council has approved Somalia as the nation that will serve as the new member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent seat.
Meeting on Thursday, the AU Executive Council settled on Somalia to represent the eastern Africa region.
Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Daud Aweis confirmed this development.
Aweis said that Somalia would take up the seat for the 2025-2026 period.
He added that the decision to endorse Somalia for the seat is proof of the unwavering confidence that the entire continent has in the country.
The minister also highlighted Somalia’s readiness to take on important global roles.
