AU Special Representative to Somalia Condemns Terror Attack on Mogadishu Hotel

Ambassador Francisco Madeira, AU’s Special Representative to Somalia condemned last weekend’s attack at Mogadishu’s Elite Hotel.

The hotel, located along the popular Liido Beach, came under heavy attack from Al-Shabaab extremists on the evening of Sunday August 16.

Reports indicate that more than 15 people lost their lives during the attack.

Ambassador Madeira, who also serves as the head of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), called the attack on innocent and unarmed Somalis “heinous.”

In his press release, Madeira said the militants wanted to use the attack to inflict “maximum casualty” on the hundreds of innocent civilians at the facility.

He urged the people of Somalia to remain resilient in the face of the ongoing deadly attacks.

Moreover, he reassured Somalis of AU’s commitment in working closely with their government to resist those who are against the country’s peace, development, unity, and progress.

Ambassador Madeira conveyed his deep condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed during the attack while wishing the injured quick recovery.
