The African Union Commission (AUC) has warned African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) personnel to steer clear of political infighting in Somalia.
A memo from AUC’s Peace and Security Council warned the AMISOM personnel against getting involved in political infighting in the East African nation.
Somalia is currently embroiled in heated political fights.
The country has been unable to hold parliamentary and presidential elections that were due in December 2020 and February 2021 respectively.
According to the memo, AMISOM officers should not take sides or be seen to be taking sides in such conflicts.
AU urged the senior AMISOM officers to restrict and monitor all personnel and equipment closely to ensure that none is used in a partisan manner.
Nevertheless, the memo directed AMISOM to get involved if critical installations, such as Villa Somalia, are breached.
