AUPSC Appoints Ex-President Obasanjo to Negotiate Ethiopia-Somalia Row

The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has app0inted a former President of Nigeria to negotiate talks between Ethiopia and Somalia.

AUPSC announced the appointment of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday.

According to the organization, Obasanjo would lead the negotiations to prevent the possible escalation of the diplomatic row into a full-blown war.

There are fears that the strain in relations between the two nations could worsen security.

Relations between both nations worsened this month after Ethiopia signed an agreement with Somaliland on January 1, 2024.

Obasanjo is likely to have a difficult time since Somalia had vowed not to engage in any dialogue with Ethiopia.

Somalia said it would only discuss the matter with Ethiopia once the latter cancels the agreement with Somaliland.
