AUSSOM Honours Kenya Navy Officers in Kismayo with Medals and Certificates for Stabilizing Somalia

The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) honored the Kenya Navy’s Special Boat Unit troops at the Seaport Kismayo Tactical Operating Base (TOB) on Saturday, awarding them medals and certificates for their efforts in promoting Somalia’s peace and stability.

AUSSOM Sector 2 Deputy Commander Col. Meshack Kishoyian praised the troops’ professionalism and bravery, highlighting their role in enhancing security and economic growth in Kismayo and Jubaland State.

The ceremony was attended by Commanding Officer 2 Mechanised Infantry Battalion, Lt. Col. John Maina, and Officer Commanding Sea Port – Kismayo TOB, Maj. David Wema.

The Kenya Navy’s Special Boat Unit (SBU) has played a significant role in maritime security operations in the region. In 2012, during Operation Sledge Hammer, the SBU was instrumental in capturing the port city of Kismayo from al-Shabaab militants. Major Eric Wambugu, then heading the SBU, coordinated attacks from the sea, ensuring the success of the mission.

The SBU continues to enhance its capabilities through rigorous training programs. In November 2022, the unit graduated its sixth batch of specially trained operators, who underwent a twelve-week course covering surveillance, interdiction, basic seamanship, and search and rescue operations.

These ongoing efforts underscore the SBU’s commitment to maintaining maritime security and supporting regional stability.
