The National Security Adviser, Hussein Macallin, confirmed that the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, known as AUSSOM, will replace the current ATMIS mission by January 2025.
According to the security adviser, the new mission is designed to be limited in scope, with an expected duration of 3 to 5 years, though it could conclude earlier depending on conditions on the ground.
He mentioned that Somali National Army (SNA) troops will be co-located with AUSSOM forces, who will primarily focus on securing key infrastructure such as airports and seaports and providing logistical support to the SNA.
This approach reflects a continued transition towards greater responsibility for Somalia’s security by its national forces.
