Aweis and Amb. Yu Seek Improved Cultural and Media Ties between Somalia and China

Mogadishu, Somalia– In a significant step towards deepening bilateral relations, Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Daud Aweis, hosted the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, at the ministry headquarters in Mogadishu. The two officials held high-level talks focused on enhancing cultural and media cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, Aweis and Ambassador Wang reaffirmed their commitment to fostering cultural diplomacy, with particular emphasis on media exchange, artistic collaboration, and preservation of historical archives. The leaders explored new areas of partnership aimed at strengthening people-to-people connections and promoting mutual understanding through cultural expression.

Following the discussions, the delegation toured two of Somalia’s most iconic cultural institutions — Radio Mogadishu Archives and the National Theatre of Somalia. At the National Theatre, members of the renowned Waaberi Band delivered a vibrant joint performance, featuring both Somali and Chinese songs, symbolizing the harmony and friendship between the two countries.

Aweis described the event as “a new chapter in cultural cooperation,” noting that China’s support could play a pivotal role in revitalizing Somalia’s heritage sector. Ambassador Wang, in turn, highlighted the importance of cultural ties as a foundation for long-term diplomatic relations and pledged continued support for Somalia’s artistic and media development.

The visit comes amid growing diplomatic engagement between Somalia and China, with both countries expressing readiness to explore joint initiatives in film, broadcasting, and cultural preservation.

This renewed partnership is expected to open avenues for technical training, content exchange, and restoration of national heritage institutions — signaling a shared vision of unity through culture.
