Baidoa Hosts Southwest State Book Fair to Promote Literacy and Peace

Baidoa, Somalia — The city of Baidoa came alive on Monday with the opening of the Southwest State Book Fair, a flagship event under the region’s Peace Week initiative aimed at fostering dialogue, literacy, and cultural pride.

The week-long fair gathered Somali authors, educators, publishers, and literary enthusiasts alongside international guests, marking one of the largest cultural events held in the state in recent years. The program featured book launches, educational workshops, poetry readings, and cultural exhibitions, offering a vibrant platform to showcase Somali heritage and storytelling traditions.

Organizers emphasized that the fair is not only a celebration of books but also a tool for social cohesion.

“Literacy and culture are bridges that connect communities and lay the foundation for lasting peace,” said one of the coordinators during the opening ceremony.

Attendees explored works by established Somali writers and emerging voices, while students participated in interactive sessions on creative writing, history, and the importance of reading in personal and national development. Cultural showcases highlighted Somali music, traditional crafts, and oral literature, underscoring the resilience and creativity of local communities.

The event also provided a forum for discussions on education policy and strategies to expand access to learning resources in rural and conflict-affected areas.

By anchoring the fair within Peace Week, Southwest State leaders signaled their commitment to using culture and education as vehicles for reconciliation and unity. The fair is expected to conclude later this week with a declaration promoting literacy and cultural development across the state.
