Banadir Police Vow Neutrality, Pledge to Safeguard Somalia’s Elections

Mogadishu, Somalia – As Somalia approaches a critical electoral period, the Banadir Regional Police Command has sent a clear and firm message: the force stands neutral and ready to protect the democratic process. Addressing officers following specialized training on election security and human rights, Commander Colonel Mahdi Omar Mumin outlined the responsibilities and expectations of security forces during the elections.

Colonel Mumin stressed that the Somali Police Force exists to serve the entire nation, not individual political parties. Officers were reminded that their duty is to uphold the law fairly, ensuring safety and order even amid heated political activity.

“All political parties are equal in our eyes. The police do not decide winners or losers; that decision belongs to the voters. Our role is to create a secure environment where every Somali can exercise their choice freely and safely,” Colonel Mumin stated.

The Commander warned that any sign of partisan bias among uniformed officers would betray their oath to the nation. Recognizing the passions that elections can ignite, he underscored that security personnel must remain impartial, treating every candidate, supporter, and voter with respect and legal protection.

Colonel Mumin also called on political leaders and their supporters to express their views peacefully and resolve disputes through legal channels, not through disorder. “Elections are about service, not chaos,” he said. “We will act decisively against anything that threatens the safety of Mogadishu or its citizens. Police are prepared to respond firmly but lawfully to any breach of order.”

The remarks come as part of broader efforts to professionalize the police and equip them to handle complex security challenges. The recent training emphasized upholding human rights, managing crowds safely at rallies and polling stations, and preventing interference in the voting process.
