Safiya Hassan Sheikh Ali, the first woman to be appointed Mayor of Beledweyne, has been removed from office.
Instead, Nadar Tabah Malin takes over from Safiya.
Last year, Safiya made history through her appointment as the first female Mayor of Beledweyne.
Nadar, who replaces her, has been actively involved in politics over the last 10 years.
The reasons for Safiya’s removal remain unclear having worked as Beledweyne’s mayor for the last eight months.
However, HirShabelle state is gearing up for elections.
Mohamed Ali Aadle, HirShabelle’s Minister of Interior, has instructed Nadar to assume her mayoral duties with immediate effect.
