Berbera Airport’s Transformation into a World-Class Facility is Almost Complete

Dritan Gjonbalaj, the Director General of Somaliland’s Berbera International Airport says that the facelift it is receiving is designed to make it a world-class facility.

For months, the facility has been undergoing infrastructural improvement.

Gjonbalaj said that the project is almost complete thus paving the way to the reopening of the airport to receive flights from all over the world.

He told the media that once complete, Berbera International Airport would match the best facilities around the world.

The airport is the second largest and busiest in the country after Egal International Airport in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.

The ongoing infrastructural improvement project is designed to ensure that Berbera meets international requirements.

Its proximity to the brand new Berbera Seaport, which Dubai Ports (DP World) has been constructing, makes it more attractive to travelers and traders alike.

The Soviet Union built the airport in the 1970s. It had a runway of 4kms, which was one of the longest in Africa at the time.

The government of Somaliland has launched a campaign to transform Berbera city into an economic hub, hence the decision to improve the airport and the seaport.
