Breakthrough in Turkey-Mediated Talks between Somalia and Ethiopia

The third round of talks between Somalia and Ethiopia, mediated by Turkey, resulted in a significant joint declaration reaffirming mutual respect for sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed their commitment to working collaboratively within the framework of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the African Union’s Constitutive Act.

Key outcomes include plans to finalize bilateral agreements enabling Ethiopia to secure sustainable access to the sea through Somali territory, emphasizing Somalia’s sovereign authority.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the mediator, highlighted the importance of focusing on future cooperation rather than past differences, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations.

This development marks a crucial step toward strengthening economic ties and regional stability.
