Officials from the United Nations-mandated Independent Strategic Review (ISR) team, led by Amb. Maman Sidikou, visited the Sector 3 headquarters in Baidoa this week.
The visit marks a significant step in assessing and enhancing the effectiveness of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Brig. Gen. Besfat Fente Tegegn, the Sector 3 Commander, provided a comprehensive briefing on the readiness of Ethiopian troops, their Area of Responsibility (AOR), and the collaborative efforts between AUSSOM, the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), and Somali Security Forces (SSF).
Troop Readiness
Brig. Gen. Tegegn emphasized the preparedness of Ethiopian troops under AUSSOM to fulfill their mandate in Sector 3.
Tripartite Partnership
The collaboration between AUSSOM, UNSOS, and SSF is crucial for achieving stability in Somalia. UNSOS’s logistical and operational support has been instrumental in enabling AUSSOM and SSF to carry out their missions effectively.
ISR’s Objective
The ISR team is in Somalia to consult with various stakeholders, including the UN, Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), AUSSOM, Troop/Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs), and other partners.
Their goal is to identify ways to improve UNSOS’s support to AUSSOM in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024).
The ISR team’s recommendations, expected by April 1, 2025, will be presented to the UN Security Council (UNSC).
These recommendations aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of UNSOS in supporting AUSSOM’s mandate, ultimately contributing to the stabilization and security of Somalia.
This visit underscores the ongoing international commitment to supporting Somalia’s transition to lasting peace and security.
