Britain Deeply Concerned over Al-Shabaab’s Growing Activities in Somalia

British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, has expressed deep concern over the escalating activities of Al-Shabaab militants based in Somalia. In a recent address to the United Kingdom Parliament, Lammy emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration with international partners to closely monitor and counter the imminent terror threats posed by this Al-Qaeda-linked group.

This development follows the United Nations Security Council’s recent adoption of a UK-drafted resolution that renews sanctions on Al-Shabaab. A significant aspect of this resolution is its focus on the group’s increasing connections with Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Reports indicate that discussions have been taking place between Al-Shabaab and the Houthis regarding potential cooperation, including the supply of weapons. Additionally, the Houthis have been expanding their influence in the Horn of Africa, with interactions involving both Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

The Security Council’s resolution aims to address these emerging threats by imposing targeted sanctions designed to disrupt the operational capabilities of these militant groups. The international community remains vigilant in its efforts to counter the evolving dynamics of terrorism in the region.
