Burundian Troops Evacuated from Flooded Xawaadley Base, No Casualties

Mogadishu, Somalia – The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) confirmed on Tuesday the safe evacuation of Burundian troops from the Xawaadley Forward Operating Base, northeast of Mogadishu, following severe flooding on Monday.

In an official statement, AUSSOM said that although one of the evacuation helicopters experienced a technical malfunction, the pilots managed to land safely, and no injuries were reported.

“All troops and crew were relocated to the nearest military base,” the AU mission stated, emphasizing that there were no casualties during the operation.

Despite the incident, the Somali government has yet to comment publicly on the evacuation or the flooding that prompted it. The Xawaadley area has been prone to seasonal weather challenges, which continue to impact military operations and humanitarian access.
