Mogadishu, Somalia – Chief Justice Baashe Yusuf Ahmed on Wednesday presided over the opening of a high-level national forum at the Supreme Court, convening legal professionals, judges, and senior court officials to address critical challenges in Somalia’s justice sector.
The forum, held under the theme “Strengthening the Rule of Law and Enhancing Judicial Integrity,” aims to foster open dialogue between legal practitioners and judicial authorities on issues hindering the effective delivery of justice. Participants are expected to share insights, propose reforms, and develop practical solutions to systemic challenges faced by lawyers and the wider judiciary.
In his opening remarks, Chief Justice Baashe underscored the importance of judicial independence, access to legal services, and strengthening public trust in the legal system. He emphasized that the forum represents a crucial step toward building a more transparent, accountable, and efficient judiciary.
“The rule of law is the backbone of a functioning state. We must confront the obstacles facing our lawyers and courts, and work collaboratively to ensure the justice system serves all Somalis fairly,” he stated.
Key topics on the agenda include delays in court proceedings, limited legal aid services, professional standards in legal practice, and the need for ongoing judicial training. The forum also addresses gaps in case management systems and calls for greater collaboration among legal institutions at federal and state levels.
The initiative is part of the judiciary’s broader reform agenda, supported by the Federal Government and international development partners, aimed at restoring public confidence and enhancing access to justice across Somalia.
The national forum will continue over the coming days with panel discussions, expert presentations, and workshops, culminating in a set of policy recommendations to be adopted by the judiciary.
