AFRICOM has admitted that civilians died during one of its bombings carried out in Somalia on February 23, 2019.
A recently released quarterly report states that the US Command in Africa (AFRICOM) carried out 91 airstrikes between February 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020.
AFRICOM said that the airstrikes were aimed at Violent Extremist Organizations in the Horn of Africa nation.
The United States military has received allegations from human rights groups of 27 incidents involving civilians in Somalia.
It has also been investigating allegations that 90 civilians were either injured or killed during the airstrikes.
Its statement said, “The February 23, 2019 incident caused two civilian deaths and three injuries, which we regret. Our intended targets were Al-Shabaab militants.”
The latest quarterly report dismissed earlier allegations made against AFRICOM, although it acknowledged the “unintended” and “regrettable” death of civilians.
