A Malaysian citizen was arrested in the East African nation of Somalia for belonging to the Al-Shabaab group.
Reports from Malaysia confirmed the arrest of Ahmad Mustakim Abdul Hamid.
Saifuddin Abdullah, Malaysia’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Hamid had been arrested and charged in court for being a member of the militant group.
According to Abdullah, the suspect had been a member of Al-Shabaab for nine years before Somali authorities caught up with and arrested him.
On September 18, the foreign affairs minister confirmed that the government had notified Hamid’s family of the situation facing their kin in Somalia.
The minister also stated that an officer from the Malaysian Embassy in Sudan had traveled to meet with Hamid and ascertain that he’s in excellent condition.
