Confusion as Election of New Leadership of the Lower House Fails to Start

Confusion reigns among House of the People (Lower House) legislators, as they are yet to start electing their new parliamentary leadership.

The Members of Parliament (MPs) were to elect the leadership on Wednesday, April 27.

Their colleagues from the Senate (Upper House) elected their Speaker and Deputy Speakers on Tuesday, April 26.

However, it remains unclear whether the Lower House members will elect their preferred leadership.

Major General Abdi Hassan Hijar, the Commander of Somali Police Force (SPF), had called for the postponement of the entire process.

Hijar stated that he’s unable to guarantee the safety of individuals set to take part in today’s process.

MPs have already gathered at Afiyosini in Mogadishu for the elections.
