Kinshasa, DRC – More than 50 Somali nationals detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been released after successful diplomatic efforts by the Somali government, officials confirmed.
The individuals had been held in recent days, primarily in the city of Lubumbashi, under unclear circumstances. Their detention prompted swift intervention from Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Congo, and the East African Community, Ilyas Ali Hassan.
According to diplomatic sources, Amb. Hassan engaged Congolese authorities three days prior to the release, formally requesting the detainees’ freedom on behalf of the federal government of Somalia. His appeal reportedly emphasized the importance of upholding the rights of foreign nationals and strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
Following these discussions, Congolese officials agreed to release the group, allowing them to resume their travels.
The Somali government has welcomed the decision, describing it as a positive outcome of constructive diplomacy. Authorities are now coordinating with local Somali communities and international partners to ensure the individuals receive necessary support and safe passage.
The incident underscores growing Somali diplomatic engagement across Africa, as Mogadishu works to safeguard its citizens abroad while deepening regional cooperation.
