Constitutional Affairs Minister Calls for Progressive Electoral Model for Somalia

Salah Jama, Somalia’s Minister of Constitutional Affairs, has urged the leaders meeting in Dhusamareb to give the country a fairly progressive electoral model.

Jama said this while addressing the press from his office on Monday August 17.

In his address, he mentioned that Somalia had made huge strides in its political and electoral deliberations between 2004 and 2016.

He said that the deliberations are not complete yet, as evidenced by the Dhusamareb talks between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS).

For months, the country has been looking forward to the one-person-one-vote electoral model, which would have been a huge departure from what voters are accustomed to.

However, the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) said it would be impossible to hold one-person-one-vote elections in 2020, as scheduled.

Consequently, FGS and FMS leaders have been meeting in Dhusamareb to find the best solution, which Jama says is not an impossible task.
