Construction of Border Wall between Somalia and Kenya Resumes

Construction of the wall along the border between Somalia and Kenya has resumed, a Somali ex-military leader has confirmed.

Col. Aden Ruffle, a former Somali soldier, said the Kenyan authorities have resumed constructing the controversial 700km wall.

However, he has urged Somalis living along the border to be vigilant lest the Kenyan authorities encroach on Somalia’s territory under the guise of building the wall.

Kenya announced plans to erect the wall immediately after the deadly terror attack at Garissa University on April 2, 2015 that killed 148 of its citizens, many of who were students.

The wall was part of Kenya’s solution to closing the routes that Al-Shabaab militants use to enter the country to wreak havoc.

The government of Kenya suspended the wall’s construction in March 2018.

At the time, Governor Ali Roba of Mandera County in Kenya said the decision came after a consultative meeting with a Somali delegation led by Governor Mohamed Mahamud of Gedo.
