COVID-19 Cases Soaring in Somalia and Djibouti Due to the Porous Border

Authorities have announced that COVID-19 cases are soaring in both Somalia and Djibouti. They are blaming the porous border between the two countries for that.

According to authorities, regional neighbors have cause for worry since the massive increase in these two countries portends danger to the rest of them.

By Wednesday, Djibouti had reported 1,120 confirmed COVID-19 cases. In Somalia, the number currently stands at 835 cases.

Moreover, medical experts believe that the situation is far from improving.

The situation could be made worse by the fact that both Somalia and Djibouti share language and culture with other communities in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Lia Tadesse, reported that 13 of the new cases in the country were people who had recently travelled illegally from Djibouti and Somalia.

Those 13 have pushed Ethiopia’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 162. The health ministry says the numbers could be higher because of the porous borders with the two nations.
