Authorities have announced that COVID-19 has killed 40 Somaliland expats working and living in the United Kingdom.
Abdilahi Abdi Derie, the Head of the Somaliland Mission to the United Kingdom, announced this on Tuesday.
Derie said he has a list containing the names of 40 people originally from Somaliland who succumbed to the virulent disease.
Further, he said that most of the deceased are the elderly. The Head of Mission said that youths had also succumbed to the disease.
“The information that we have shows that the deaths were scattered across Great Britain,” added Derie.
“I have continued to stay in touch with families of the dead patients. My office engages with them on the phone too,” Derie concluded.
Thus far, none of the members of the bereaved families attended the burial of their loved ones because of the strict restrictions on movement that the government imposed in the UK.
According to information released by Derie’s office, members of the Somaliland community living in London, Coventry, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, and Bristol have been hit hard.
