CPJ Labels the Continued Detention of Radio Higsi Editor as “Outrageous”

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has labeled the continued detention of Mohamed Nuur Abuuja, who is the Editor of Radio Higsi, as “outrageous.”

CPJ also demanded the immediate release of the journalist while saying that the government must allow him to work freely.

In a statement released by its Sub-Saharan representative, Muthoki Mumo, CPJ said, “Nuur’s arrest and continued detention is an outrageous infringement of his fundamental rights.”

Nuur was arrested close to two months ago. Since then, as CPJ noted, the government has failed to present him in court.

Further, Mumo castigated the government for failing to provide information regarding his whereabouts and well-being despite detaining him for two months.

Nuur, who was arrested on March 7, has been denied access to a lawyer. Additionally, his family has no information about his whereabouts or been allowed to see him since.

According to CPJ’s statement, Nuur was arrested on the allegations of using his reporting to criticize security personnel.
