Dahabshiil, Somtel Pledge $200,000 for Drought-Hit Awdal Communities

Hargeisa, Somaliland – In a significant show of corporate responsibility, Dahabshiil Group and its telecommunications subsidiary Somtel have jointly announced a $200,000 donation to support communities grappling with severe drought in the Awdal region of Somaliland.

Speaking during the announcement, Dahabshiil Group CEO Abdirashid Duale underscored the urgency of the humanitarian crisis and emphasized the private sector’s responsibility in times of national hardship.

“We are deeply concerned about the suffering of our people. It is our responsibility to act swiftly in times of hardship. This donation reflects our long-standing commitment to supporting the communities we serve,” said Duale.

The funds are expected to go toward emergency food, water, and essential supplies for vulnerable families in drought-stricken areas, where thousands are facing acute water shortages, failed harvests, and livestock losses.

Humanitarian groups and local authorities have welcomed the donation, calling for further action from other private actors to bridge the growing gap in aid as the crisis deepens.

Dahabshiil and Somtel’s contribution adds to a growing number of local initiatives aimed at tackling the worsening humanitarian conditions across northern Somalia.
