The specially trained Danab Forces have killed an Al-Shabaab tax collector during a military operation conducted near Leego.
The forces carried out the operation near facilities that the Al-Qaeda linked group uses.
Somalia military issued a statement confirming the operation and the casualties involved. In it, authorities said the head of tax collection at Wanleweyn was among those killed.
Other than the tax collector, the military confirmed the deaths of two other members of Al-Shabaab. They were protecting the tax collector.
A senior military officer in the region, Ismail Abdimalik Malin, said the operation was a response to several complaints raised by locals.
Furthermore, Malin also said the military destroyed checkpoints that Al-Shabaab had erected in the region for tax collection purposes.
Malin also confirmed the identity of the slain tax collector as Abu Haashim.
Al-Shabaab continues to control several areas in Somalia, which it also uses for extorting taxes from local residents and businesses.
