Defense Minister Vows Response to Sovereignty Threats

DOHA — Somalia’s Defense Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, has declared that the federal government will not compromise on protecting the country’s sovereignty and will firmly oppose any actions that undermine its territorial integrity or national dignity.

Minister Fiqi made these remarks during an interview with Al Jazeera Net while in Qatar to attend the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX 2026).

Stance on UAE Relations

Addressing the diplomatic rift with the United Arab Emirates, Fiqi defended Mogadishu’s recent decision to suspend all agreements with Abu Dhabi. He described the move as a necessary response to “violations that directly affected the country’s sovereignty.”

The Minister stressed that all military bases operating in Somalia must be under the direct authority of the Federal Government and established with full respect for Somalia’s statehood.

“Assistance stopped nearly two years ago,” Fiqi noted regarding UAE military support, adding that some past aid was not channeled through official government institutions.

Strategic Interests and Somaliland

When asked why foreign powers seek a military presence in the country, Fiqi cited counterterrorism efforts, the fight against piracy, and Somalia’s strategic location along key maritime routes such as the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. He also pointed to international interest in natural resources, including oil and minerals.

The Defense Minister reiterated the government’s position on Somaliland, asserting that it remains an integral part of Somalia. He warned that any agreements entered into separately by Hargeisa violate the constitution and international law, potentially triggering renewed instability.

Concerns Over Israel

Fiqi also voiced concern over reports regarding Israel‘s involvement in the region. He claimed that such moves would threaten Somalia’s unity, alleging that Tel Aviv seeks to exploit Somaliland’s strategic location.

He further referred to unverified reports alleging plans related to the relocation of Palestinians to the region, characterizing these potential actions as a disregard for local interests. The Federal Government continues to insist that all foreign military and diplomatic engagements must be conducted exclusively through Mogadishu.
